Session 6: What’s the Story You’re Going to Tell?

Focus: Integrating everything and stepping into a clearer, more congruent story.

  • Reflection: "Segment X Thinking" provokes us to inventory of our decades, to let the most obvious plotline emerge. The thing about plotline: they not only describe the the past, give off hints about what might be unfolding. Some of us cannot help but burst outloud during family binge night, "Oh no! I know here the story is headed! And you spoil the plot for everyone...again" The best story writers intentionally lay clues and traps to hook the audience to stay with them, to give the plot more time to thicken. Why should not your life be the same? Why should we not expect that the plot is going to thicken, the cave we'd rather not enter seems to grow in size as we near it, measuring us right down to the core of our deepest meanings and beliefs.

  • Segment X says: You have but some many decades ahead, if you knew you could live to 100, what would you like to do with them? No, really -- YOU, deciding what you want to do with them, using whatever decision-making system you rely on -- thank you for a new definiton of "Authenticity" Mr. Sartre -- to be firm that you are choosing to make the changes implied by the decision you make? You are going to participate with maturity and mastery's demands. You are going to be gentle and fierce confinements which may have been tolerable formerly. And you are going to reassign them your propoer place. If you are fortunate, perhaps you may notice a cast of thousands stand ready to witness the epic choices you will inititate. If no one understands why you must so act, at least you must know that life lived on the bedrock of your authentic, most congruent self is the only choice. It will shape all the other choices.

  • The one thing we know about the future is that you and time will be there. And what you are now, in your deepest values and self, you shall also be whenever that moment comes that we associate with "the future." We will be in it, in all our deepest essence. And we will still be the one who must act. The Epic Persistence to make choices, and to progressively steward the authoring mindset that knows the Protagonist must act, or the story stalls. What is the story you aim to tell, the story you aim to embody?

Tell us a story.

  • Revisiting your “movie trailer” from Session 4—how would you rewrite it now?

  • Exercise: Share your story—the real one, the one worth living.

  • Discussion: What’s different? What’s clarified? What are your next steps?

  • Final Takeaway: Getting your story straight isn’t just about clarity—it’s about alignment and action.

  • And when it’s over, the guild will be here—to affirm your story and learn our way forward into them together.

What is Story Mapping and How Do You Do It?

Story Mapping is a reflective exercise that allows individuals to delve into their life journey by structuring it as a compelling narrative. The four-part story structure usually consists of something that fits the setup, the confrontation, the climax and the resolution.

  • In the setup, the "Once Upon a Time," participants will introduce the main characters, including themselves, and set the stage for the story. This is where the background information and initial challenges are presented, laying the foundation for what is to come. Reflect on key events, people, and decisions that have shaped your path, and consider how they have influenced your narrative.

As the story progresses into the confrontation phase, participants will explore the major challenges, conflicts, and obstacles they have faced along their journey. This is the central part of the narrative where the tension builds, and characters are tested in significant ways. Consider moments of adversity, growth, and transformation that have defined pivotal points in your story. Think about how you have navigated through these challenges and the lessons you have learned along the way.

The climax is the peak of the story, where the most intense moment of the journey unfolds. It is a turning point that leads to the resolution and ultimate outcome. Reflect on a moment of profound realization, achievement, or change that has had a profound impact on your path. Consider how this moment has shaped your narrative and influenced the person you have become. Finally, in the resolution, participants will wrap up their story by reflecting on the lessons learned, the growth experienced, and the future possibilities that lie ahead. Use this opportunity to tie up loose ends, express gratitude, and envision the next chapter of your journey.
